Summertime is a time of fun in the sun and a time of finishing the to-do list around the house. In a perfect world, these tasks could be done year-round, but Old Man Winter seems to frown upon the use of power tools and lawn equipment in the extreme cold. Not only is it next to impossible to use your garage tools with winter clothing but the snow and sleet can bring a slew of electrical issues to contend with.

Clear up your garage space for items that will get some use during the winter. Ski equipment, winter toys, snow blowers, sleds and snowshoes are all ten times more useful in the winter than any one of your hand or lawn tools. On top of convenience, many tools are susceptible to broken and cracked parts when exposed to freezing conditions.

Summer tool storage includes preparing and storing your lawn equipment rendered useless by piles of snow. Drain your equipment of gas (i.e. ran until the tank is empty).
Glass clippings, dirt, and debris should be cleaned off lawn equipment and allow them to dry thoroughly. Lubricate all moving parts and be sure to shop around for blade
sharpeners before they skyrocket in price in the springtime. Spark plugs should be disconnected, which may need to be cleaned of dirt, oil and rust before use in the warmer months.

Once everything is prepared for winter storage bring it down to Clearline Self Storage where we will be happy to store it for you in our indoor, heated and secured facility.

As the rain continues for three days straight, the temperatures are dipping and
winter is closing in on us. While some people focus on decorations for Christmas
and the coming New Year, others are focused on their pride and joy: their car.
Whether new or old, sports car or mini van, your automobile needs to be protected
from the harsh winter season. An indoor storage facility is a perfect solution. There
are a few steps that should be considered before storing your car that will ensure its
longevity in the coming years.

Before storing your car (and to prep it for use in the winter months):

(1) Change the oil. Used, dirty oil is NOT A GOOD THING TO leave in an engine
while storing it. The byproducts CAN build up and produce acids that will corrode
your engine, thereby leaving “the brain” of your car useless.

(2) Preserve your fuel system. Fuel left in your fuel lines longer than two months
CAN clog the fuel system. Adding a fuel preservative will help prevent oxidation,
which will prevent rust and deposits forming in your fuel system.

(3) Antifreeze is made of chemicals that can break down over the winter months
and corrode your cooling system causing leaks. This MAY BE A GOOD time to flush
out your coolant system or add a stabilizer such as a corrosion inhibitor to keep
your antifreeze neutralized.

(4) Protecting the outside of your car is just as important as the inside. Before
storing, be sure to wash all dirt and debris off. After a complete dry, add a paint
protector or sealant to protect that shine you love so much. Then cover it with a car
cover to keep the dust off your vehicle.

For those families with small children, keeping Santa’s Christmas gifts hidden can be a daunting task. Finding the right space, getting the gifts into that space, and keeping the kids out the entire season is what makes it so difficult. If you are like most families, as the kids get older, they get sneakier and will likely locate their treasures before the big day.

Consider hiding your gifts in a self-storage facility. No more running up the stairs with bags while the kids are occupied. You can simply drive up, drive in and drop off your goods. Clearline Self Storage heated facilities also make a perfect place to gift wrap these gifts without being interrupted.

After the big day, most parents pause a moment while taking in the mess of wrapping paper and smashed bows. A clutter home just got exponentially worse.

The first step is to donate unwanted toys. Second step would be to get a head start on spring cleaning and begin storing all the old toys, furniture, and supplies that won’t be needed or used for a while. Whether the season, family size, or situation, a storage unit will always be an asset.

One of the most enjoyed pastimes of summer is sitting on a patio soaking up the sun and the outdoors. Then the fall weather brings on cooler breezes and amazing leaf colors to enjoy. After the first flurry of the year, patio furniture is ignored and bypassed for the comfort of indoor warmth. Neglecting your furniture during the harsh months is the quickest way to lose that furniture to rust and other damage.

The most efficient way to prevent wear and tear in the winter months is to store your furniture in a self storage facility such as Clearline Self Storage in Winnipeg. After choosing a size that fits your needs from a large selection of heated, indoor units, you must prepare your outdoor patio furniture for storage. These steps will keep any mold or mildew from forming and surprising you come spring.

(1) Clean off the furniture using a soft scrubbing sponge, soap and warm water. Adding ½ a cup of bleach per gallon of water will help remove any mold from your furniture.

(2) Allow to COMPLETELY dry. Any wet spots will cause mildew during storage. Follow the same cleaning steps with pillows, cushions and umbrellas.

(3) Stack your chairs after cleaning for more efficient storage spacing.

(4) If you plan on storing your grill, be sure to clean it first. Always detach the propane and never store propane tanks in storage facilities. Try to use up the last bit of propane before winter. Read your owner’s manual to see if your grill should be stored with protective oil during the winter months.

Come spring, remove your patio items and they should be ready for immediate enjoyment.

Tackling your summertime organizing may be lost in the shuffle of pool time, lounging and barbeques. Although it is certainly not a preferred summer pastime, it must be done. The best place to start is by sorting your clothing into seasons. By keeping your clothing organized by seasons, you will make your seasonal storage easier. While sorting, remember to divide clothing into three piles: keep, donate and store. By donating your unused clothing, you are not only creating more space in your home and self storage, you are also helping the less fortunate in Winnipeg.

Storing your Winter Clothes
Storing your winter clothes is not just a job of fold-and-store. There are simple, preventative measures that will keep your clothes in perfect condition while stored through the winter months.

˜ Clean, clean, clean
Like other self storage items, clean them before storing them. Insects are the enemy to clothing, and clothing that is infiltrate by insects typically came into the unit already infested. The way to prevent this is to wash clothes in hot water. This will kill any mites or other insects that may have created an unseen habitat. If you have delicate clothing, freezing is also an option. Place clothes in a freezer bag and into the freezer for 48 hours to kill any pests. Do the same for teddy bears and stuffed animals.

˜ Hanging and Boxing
Use thick hangers when possible. Wire hangers will leave a difficult crease. Cover with clean pillowcases and thick plastic bags. Plastic bins work for foldable clothing, just be sure to put the heavier clothing on the bottom and drill a hole or two for air circulation and mold/mildew prevention.

˜ Insect Prevention
Cedar chips are suggested over mothballs, which can become hazardous to your health if used in a small storage container. Lavender will also fend off moths and insects, but be aware that the scent will linger until clothing is washed again.

Tackling Winter Gear
The winter gear is just as useless as the heavy coats during the summertime. Moving the snow blower, shovel, boots and ski equipment into storage with your clothing leaves even more space for barbeques and lazy lounging. Be sure to check out the post on preparing appliances for self storage before storing any equipment or appliances.
